Welcome to the spring issue of Totum’s BD and marketing newsletter. The first quarter of 2019 has been incredibly busy with BD and marketing roles coming in at all levels of seniority and across specialist and generalist titles.

BD and marketing: Latest trends

Also, a big welcome to Brooke McClure who joined the Marketing & BD team in January of this year. Brooke will be working closely with Lacey Near and Georgia Girling and will focus on assistant/executive level roles. Brooke has actually been with Totum for over five years as a Team Coordinator, so knows us really well! Click here to find out more about our newest team member. Over the past few months we have seen that financial services, corporate/transactional and litigation are still areas in which firms are wanting to boost their BD teams. We have seen a rise in roles looking for media, technology, digital economy and energy/infrastructure expertise. We have also seen a shift in some of the larger global firms looking to boost their BD resource within Government/public sector as they develop and grow their capabilities in this area. They may have previously tried to combine this as part of a wider BD role, but as it is such a specific market, they need that public sector expertise in order to drive it effectively. We have also seen a rise in communications roles across corporate comms, PR and internal comms. A number of these opportunities have been newly created in light of wider considerations (including Brexit) as firms look to ensure they have a strong comms strategy and tailored messaging in place, both internally and externally. On the marketing side, we have seen one of our clients create a marketing role solely focused on raising the profile of its diversity and inclusion strategy and activities. This really demonstrates how seriously diversity and inclusion is taken in a client’s decision-making process as to who to work with. At the senior end, Rebecca Ellis and Liz Chappell have been increasingly working on some incredibly interesting exclusive and retained opportunities. These have ranged from Head of Marketing, BD and Client Development roles to searching out industry expertise across rail, energy, financial institutions tech and media. If you’d like to chat to any of the team about current market trends, what we are seeing in team structures and the future of marketing and BD within the legal sector, please do get in touch. Even if you’re not sure whether you’re ready for your next career move and would appreciate some advice about your career, we’re always happy to chat. And if there’s anything you’d like us to cover in this blog in the future, just let us know. We welcome feedback and ideas for the future!
